Royal Rumble (2005) was the eighteenth annual Royal Rumble professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on January 21, 2005 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, and featured talent from the Raw and SmackDown brands. As has been customary since 1993, the Royal Rumble match winner received a match at that year's WrestleMania, (in this instance: WrestleMania 21) for the world championship of their designated brand (the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw, or the WWE Championship on SmackDown).
Including a match on the Bottom Line pre-show, seven professional wrestling matches were featured on the event's supercard, a scheduling of more than one main event. The main event was the annual 30-competitor Royal Rumble match which featured wrestlers from both brands. The primary match on the Raw brand was for the World Heavyweight Championship between reigning champion Triple H and Shawn Michaels. The primary match on the SmackDown brand was for the WWE Championship between reigning champion Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam. Featured matches on the undercard included Sting versus Ric Flair in a Royal Rumble qualifying match and John Cena versus Big Show for the United States Championship.
